SLEEP APNEA

A healthy night’s sleep is a fundamental human need. Sleep is important for our physical and emotional health, so we can have the energy we need for ourselves and those we care about. Poor sleep can impact on mood, concentration and memory, as well as affecting our physical well being. If you have sleep apnea, your airway collapses during sleep and prevents air from getting to your lungs. You stop breathing momentarily, which causes sleep disturbances and puts a strain on your heart.

You may be snoring loudly at night, be excessively tired during the day, have morning headaches or you may be depressed or irritable.

If you think you do have sleep apnea either talk to your GP or Dr Abicair about arranging a sleep study, which can be done at home. With the results of the sleep study we can see whether SomnoDent would be suitable for treating your sleep apnea.

What is SomnoDent?

SomnoDent is an oral sleep apnea appliance consisting of two dental plates, which look similar to a sports mouth guard. SomnoDent is custom made to fit your mouth and should be worn at night whilst you’re sleeping.

How does SomnoDent work?

Using a titration key, the SomnoDent appliance can be gradually adjusted to bring your lower jaw forward, opening your airway. Treatment is painless and non invasive.

Is SomnoDent the right treatment for me?

If you suffer from mild to moderate Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), SomnoDent should benefit you. If your OSA is classed as severe and you cannot tolerate other recommended treatments, then speak to your Sleep Physician or Dr Abicair about trying SomnoDent. Please note: success of sleep apnea therapy is individual to each patient. Some patients may not be able to tolerate the SomnoDent or any other oral appliance in their mouths. Temporary side effects such as sore jaw joints, sore teeth or irritation of the soft tissues in the mouth may occur.

Consult Dr Abicair with any concerns regarding your treatment.
